Recent work

Check our last article (dx.doi.org/10.1002/anie.201004310) on the use of « Heteronuclear NMR Correlations to Probe the Local Structure of Catalytically Active Surface Aluminum Hydride Species on γ-Alumina ».

This work is the result of a collaboration with Régis Gauvin (UCCS, Lille) and Mostafa Taoufik (CPE, Lyon) who have interest in the synthesis, characterisation and applications of grafted catalysts. Here, we have synthesized aluminum hydrides supported on partially dehydroxylated alumina, through the hydrogenolysis of grafted alkyl precursors. The multinuclear NMR study has revealed that these species are characterised by a strong dipolar and scalar coupling between 1H and 27Al nuclei. In HMQC correlations Al–H entities were identified by filtering out the signal of the Al2O3 bulk. These main-group-metal hydrides catalyze both ethylene polymerization and hydrogenation.

Research Activities

Main Scientific Contributions

I have been member of the NMR and Applications group of the UCCS laboratory (Dir. Profs Lionel Montagne & Jean-Paul Amoureux) since November 2002. My activity has been equally shared between the development of new methods for solid-State NMR and the applications of NMR to the structure determination of glasses and crystalline materials in solid-state chemistry.

In NMR methodology, I have participated in the improvement of the sensitivity of the MQMAS experiments by introducing the SPAM concept. This research project was motivated by the PhD work of A. Flambard, that concentrated on the NMR-study of niobiophosphate glasses (for non-linear optical applications). I have also proposed a new decoupling sequence dedicated to quadrupolar nuclei [Delevoye, 2007] in order to decouple efficiently the scalar coupling which sometimes broadens resonances due to the coupling of central and satellite transitions of a quadrupolar nucleus. In parallel, I have participated in several projects where NMR was a key element in the structural study of crystalline, amorphous or disordered materials. I am one of the main researchers, at the origin of the transversal axis (NMR and modelling), which was initiated in 2006 after our laboratories merged to become the UCCS.

With the recent new developments in the domain of DFT calculations of NMR parameters (chemical shifts, quadrupolar parameters, etc.), I have also created a transversal research program with another group within the UCCS, Modelling and Spectroscopy (Prof. J-F Paul and Dr S. Cristol). Our collaboration has led to the publication of several articles where the combination of NMR and the ab initio approach has played a key role in the interpretation of the NMR results in terms of structural parameters within the materials. In 2009, F. Vasconcelos completed his PhD with us on the “first Principles NMR in 17O, applied to the study of crystalline and amorphous phosphates. He revealed in sodium phosphate materials, the long-, medium- and short-range influence of 17O chemical shift, quadrupolar coupling constant CQ and asymmetry parameter Q, respectively. His results include a first evidence of long-range disorder and short-range ordering through the distribution of NMR parameters in a phosphate glass. Since 2007, N. Forler continued our combined approach by investigating the process of water weathering of a phosphate glass by a multinuclear NMR study. In particular, we have calculated NMR parameters for protonated sodium phosphate crystalline phases and showed the strong correlation between NMR parameters and the type of proton bondings in phosphates.

Background

I have a background in material science and a strong experience in the field of methodology and applications of solid-state NMR. During my PhD with Prof. Amoureux (1995-98), I participated in the exciting development of high-resolution experiments for quadrupolar nuclei (MQMAS) through my contribution to the development of a method of quantification for MQMAS spectra, and through it applications to microporous materials.

After one year of teaching physics (TD, practicals) at the IUT Chimie (Lille), I worked for three years for the Bruker BioSpin company, a manufacturer of NMR spectrometer, where I provided customers with scientific advice on methodology and applications in solid-state NMR. After this industrial experience, I joined the research group “NMR and Glasses” in the UCCS in 2002.
