Résumé de mes activités de recherches

Mes premiers travaux de recherche ont concerné l’étude de colloïdes phosphatés obtenus par un phénomène de coacervation. Ce processus complexe a été appréhendé au moyen de différentes méthodes physico-chimiques (spectroscopie infra-rouge, EXAFS,…) afin de comprendre l’effet de la composition des précurseurs sur la nature et la stabilité des phases obtenues. Nous avions pu montrer notamment que le champ électrostatique de certains cations comme Mn2+ induisait des séparations de phase plus prononcées (coacervat plus riche en colloïdes phosphatés).
Dans une deuxième phase, ces coacervats phosphatés ont été traités thermiquement afin de mener à des verres. Cette voie colloïdale était en phase avec les nombreuses études menées à l’époque sur les voies sol-gel-verre d’oxydes, mais elle présentait l’originalité d’être entièrement minérale (pas d’alcoxydes). Ces premiers travaux sur les verres de phosphates ont eu des retombées pour élaborer des verres conducteurs protoniques (coll. I. Abe, Nagoya) et des revêtements de bioverres sur alumine (Coll. Ostéal).
A partir des années 95, la RMN des solides s’est fortement développée et s’est révélée extrêmement intéressante pour la caractérisation de matériaux inorganiques. J’ai alors effectué de nombreux séjour chez le professeur C. Jäger à l’Université de Iéna, qui était alors un des leaders de cette technique, afin de me perfectionner dans cette technique de caractérisation. En parallèle, notre équipe s’est rapprochée d’un groupe de physiciens de l’Université de Lille (J.P. Amoureux et C. Fernandez) qui était spécialisée dans le développement de méthodes haute-résolution (MQMAS) pour les noyaux quadripolaires. Ceci a contribué à faire émerger un groupe avec pour thématique de recherche le développement méthodologique et l’application de la RMN des solides aux matériaux inorganiques. Ce groupe s’est constitué formellement en 2002, pour devenir l’équipe « Verres et Méthodologie RMN » lors de la création de l’UCCS en 2006, équipe dont j’ai pris la responsabilité.
Nos études ont été menées au départ essentiellement sur les verres de phosphates, avec le développement de méthodes de corrélation homonucléaire 31P-31P et surtout l’utilisation pour la première fois de la RMN de l’oxygène-17 dans ce type de verres. Nous avons mis au point 2 méthodes d’enrichissement isotopiques en 17O, et avons pu caractériser la connectivité de ces matériaux de manière approfondie. Ceci a été appliqué à l’étude de verres de phosphates de métaux lourds (vitrification de cendres secondaires d’incinérateurs), de verres de niobiophosphates (optique non-linéaire, Coll. ICMCB), de verres d’aluminophosphates utilisés pour la protection de matériaux aéronautiques (coll. Snecma) et plus récemment pour des verres de phosphates d’argent (vitrification de déchets nucléaires insolubles dans des patrices borosilicates, coll. CEA).  
  Grâce à sa reconnaissance dans le domaine de la RMN des solides, notre équipe a pu obtenir l’implantation à Lille d’un spectromètre RMN très haut-champ (18.8T, 800MHz) en 2004, suivi d’un 900MHz en 2009. Mes travaux sur les phosphates ont pu en bénéficier fortement, notamment pour l’étude de noyaux quadripolaires comme l’oxygène 17 ou le niobium 93. Le centre de RMN de Lille, que j’ai dirigé de 2002 à 2010, comporte maintenant 7 spectromètres et fait partie du réseau Très Grande Infrastructure RMN.
Si les verres de phosphates constituent le cœur de mes travaux de recherche, les compétences acquises dans le domaine de la RMN des verres m’ont permises d’aborder des matrices silicate, borosilicates et aluminosilicates. Je me suis alors intéressé à l’effet d’ajouts mineurs de phosphates sur les propriétés et la structure de ces verres. Ceci m’a permis de montrer que les phosphates constituent dans ces matrices des entités mono- ou dimériques, connectées au réseau uniquement par des ponts via les unités borates ou aluminates et non via les silicates. Ceci a des conséquences importantes pour les propriétés, que nous avons étudiées dans le cadre d’applications à des verres d’isolation (Coll. Isover) et des vitrocéramiques de scellement (coll. CEA et BARC Mumbai).  
  Mes projets de recherche actuels concernent le développement de propriétés exogènes aux verres, notamment l’autocicatrisation de fissures et la détection de défauts, en conservant cette approche de compréhension des relations structure-propriétés comme guide au développement de  ces matériaux innovants.
